nope..
gle doesnt mean Grand Luxery Estate...cos I have a gle thats NOT..and my bro had a 740 GLE that wasnt...now he has a GLE that is....I believe its Grand Luxury Executive...but dont quote me on it!
954 would actually probably be a s90 or v90 which had 5 cylinder engines...
volvo numbering gets a little confused in some markets...for instance a 960 turbo...is actually a 4 cylinder engine....
GENERALLY..
1st digit 2,3,4,7,9,8 is the model type
note the 2 series morphed into the 7 series morphed into the 9 series
8 series is totally different...
second digit GENERALLY refers to number of cylinders...but if its a turbo, or an oil burner not necessarily
last digit is the number of doors strictly speaking, but the badges on the back after the 2 series defaulted to a 0, hence the badge that says 940 may be on either a 4 or 5 door (although its OFFICIAL model designation is still a 944 or a 945)
GLT,GLE,TURBO (OR NOT) etc change with the market place & the model ..also special editions e.g. the 'wentworth' were available with option packs as standard....and just to really complicate it..you can order just about any option on any model...for example late 940 turbo's dropped the turbo badging and the boost guage....
so basically the rule is find out before you buy by asking!
