Bevel Gear / Angle Gear V70-XC70

I just found out that I need to replace the Angle Gear in my 1998 V70 (120K miles). Since it will cost $2500, I would prefer not to have to do this again. Is there any special maintenance I need to be aware of? Is this gear part of the automatic transmission (transaxle)? That is, is it lubricated by the transmission fluid? Or is it in its own gear box, and lubed by gear oil?

Also, the owners manual doesn't specify any specific interval for changing Transmission Fluid. Is there any recommendation?

Thanks!
