How accurate is 'distance to empty'? 850

I read somewhere that most fuel pumps require fuel to keep them cool. Running the tank low will cause the fuel pump to heat up and lead to early failure. So I rarely let the tank get below 3/4 empty. Also, in cold climates, keeping the tank fairly full reduces condensation problems
