Flametrap replacement time? 850

While changing oil/airfilter on my newly purchased '97 non-turbo 850 (1st Volvo), I noticed that the air filter was really old and dirty. It also had quite a bit of oil on it due to the crankcase blow-by. I replaced the airfilter and decided to see if more oil accumulated on the new one. Drove the car for about two weeks, popped the airbox open today and found a little accumulation near where the front hose connects to the airbox. I am pretty familiar with PCV systems and understand that Volvos use what are called flametraps that require periodic cleaning/replacement.

Is a little blow-by normal/acceptable?
or
Is it time to replace the flametrap?
if so
Is it hard to get to?

I've been putting off buying a Haynes manual but I plan on doing so. I just wanted to know that if I need to change the flametrap, if it is difficult to reach. Also if any hints or tips exist for changing it (if indeed it is tricky) I'd appreciate it if they were shared.

Thanks

Jeremy
