How accurate is 'distance to empty'? 850

My '91 740 has gone through 2 fuel pumps and my indy mechanic advised that part of the problem was driving with too little fuel in the tank. His explanation was that that particular fuel pump relies on the fuel to lubricate the pump and that running it too low was the primary cause of pump failure. The 740 didn't have a computer, but I knew it was time for gas whenever the car sputtered when I took a corner.

I just replaced the fuel pump on my 95 850 this week. In this case, a different mechanic advised that most of the fuel pump problems they see are the result of dirty fuel filters, or a blockage in the line.

Bottom line: I try to refuel as soon as possible after the light comes on, or even before. I don't let it get down to 0 on the computer.
