How accurate is 'distance to empty'? 850

When I first got my 1996 850R car brand new, I ran out of gas with 45 miles to go. Not good. I learned that this guge can be innacurate in some cars, and varies depending on how it was set when new. I had the dealer adjust it, and now it seems pretty accurate, It starts to get weak at 10 miles, but has once or twice gotten to 0. Understand I shouldn't run the beast out of fuel, but occasionally I do, as I don't bother refilling it until the gas gauge shows 50 or less to empty.
