Need help buying Volvo v40 2000, 80k miles for $8000 NYC, NY

Some one is selling their volvo, looks good, drove well, but has no service records. The only volvo mechanic I can take it to are dealers because there isnt any non dealer in my area. they seem to be a pain for upkeep.
everyoen is telling me not to get it because of upkeep. my mechanically inclined friend (honda mech), came with me drove it, he liked it but cant check anything, he has no clue. he says take it to a volvo mech, drives clean, but what to do? I try to take it to a dealer , they are all closed sundays,
and weekedays i may have to leave it overnight which the guy may not due since its his car. I am more then willing to buy but want to get it check out.
