can starting problem be related to transmission? 850 1993

My car is awaiting a replacement transmission, but is still driveable; I just have no reverse. When trying to start it this morning, it would crank but not turn over. I tried a jump but it didn't help. After about 30 minutes of trying, off and on, to start the thing, it finally turned over and then ran terribly for at least 5 minutes before leveling off. During that 5 minutes I couldn't take my foot off the accelerator or it would stall. Now it is running okay. Is there any chance this problem is related to the bad transmission, or am I looking at something entirely new and different?

Any tips would be welcome!!!!!!
