Transmission problem in the morning S70 1998

Just bought my first Volvo, a 1998 S70 with 100k miles, auto/non-turbo. Surprised at how well it moves out and handles. Only problem is during the first 15 minutes in the morning, the car shifts at high rpm (about 3500 - 4000) and bangs into 2nd. Won't shift into 4th until 4000 at about 75 mph. After 15-20 minutes, starts shifting smoothly at around 2500, like I assume it was meant to.

From other postings on transmission problems, it seems that the first step recommended is to change ATF, or flush and change. From what I described, is this where I should start? Are add-on filters or synthetic ATF typically necessary? Thanks for any response.
