Castrol 20-50 in a 1996 850? 850

I've posted earlier about a 1996 850 GLT Non-Turbo wagon I'm looking at.

Is a one owner car with good maintenace records. Even all the oil changes are documented. One strange thing though. They always used Castrol 20-50 oil. The car resided in Texas, where it is over 90degreesF for about 8 or 9 months a year. I asked a Volvo mechanic what they thought about this. He said that while the oil was much thicker than needed, it would not have harmed the engine, expecially in the heat of Texas. He felt it would just have reduced fuel economy.

What does everyone think? Could the engine have been damaged? It runs very well with plenty of power, no hesitation or noises.
