Thermostat? temp Sensor???? S70 1998

98 S70 N.A.--was running fine then went to start it today and it just kept turning over. Finally got it running (was rough to start) and within 1 minute the temp guage raced to the red zone...waited until it was cool (outside in chicago...1/2 hour) and turned the key without starting it and the temp guage was still real high. Unplugged the temp sensor off the therm housing and tried starting it...seemed to start a little rough (the Check Engine light came on) but got running. Plugged the temp sensor in again and it raced to the top.

Seems to me if the temp sensor was working right it would still take a little while to run hot even if the thermostat was broken/closed. Any suggestions on how to diagnose? I don't have a code reader.
