OK, the problem got real bad so I unplugged the Air Mass Meter. This put me in 'limp mode' but the other symptoms disappeared so FCP Groten got an order. Just got the new meter today, installed it and (at least so far) its running fine! I'll reserve full judgement for a few days since the original problem was quite intermittent.
