auto transmission leak 850

Hello,

I new on this board and have several questions.

1. Just brought my '96 850T5 Estate to the local Volvo dealer to have some leaks checked in the transmission area. I was told that the left and right axles need replacement because it was causing the leak. My question is: Why replace the whole axle assembly? Can't they just change the seals? This is going to run me the equivalent of about Philippine Peso 110,000 (US$2,000). Can anyone suggest anything.

2. I have both a '96 850T5 Estate and a '98 V70 T5. Aside from some exterior cosmetic upgrades and interior changes, are they mechanically the same? Same parts? Especially engine and drive train parts?

3. I will have to sell one car soon and could not decide which one to keep. Aside from the problem from question #1, what would you do?

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Thank you very much.
