SOS - calling all Volvo Mechanics! S80

1998 (UK) Volvo S80 T6

Had the venerable "Emission system service required" message come up (NOT ABS related as I've had Vic Rocha refurbish mine).

Dealer read off two codes, and told me that I need a new Mass air flow sensor (no investigative work other than making sure theres no air leaks/loose hoses):-

ECM-261A Long-Term Fuel Trim
ECM-271A Adaptive Lambda Control, Bank 2

Now i've asked which condition it failed on, upper or lower & I was told it was the Upper limit.

now call me thick & stupid (actually dont) but how the hell can they conclude it was a mass airflow sensor, when (a) alldatadiy only list that as a possible cause if it fails on the lower limit & (b) according to the list of possible causes for upper limit failures, it could be:

air intake leak
exhaust leak
low fuel pressure
defective O2 sensor

Any Volvo mechanics out there who can shed some light on this?

Thanks!
