I had the exact same condition occur on my '95 850. Others here on the brickboard have had similar experiences. I made the same repair to mine as you described. Electrical systems are definitely one of the weak areas in an otherwise very durable vehicle. Relays, wiring harnesses on older RWD cars, all have extensive information on this site.
