My 98's clutch groans as first engages(has for 30K miles) and chatters
a bit in first, too. No slippage though. As far as I know, there is
nothing to adjust. You can bleed the system and Volvo introduced a
different clutch pedal spring that makes it easier to engage (there
is a TSB with the part number that a dealer can look up). But I
don't think either of those would make a difference in the problems
you have.

Replacement is mostly labor. A small crane is attached to the
front top strut mounts and holds the engine up while the transmission
is separated. I believe it is about 10 hours of shop time. So,
you don't want to replace it unless you really, really have to.
