questions about price os 1999 S80?? S80

Why is it that a 1999 S80 can be had for 11K and in some cases under 10K ..these cars have only 80K miles at the most... etc.. I'm just really curious as I'd like to buy one for my dad, but would this be a bad decision? if so, why? Would a S70 be more reliable?
