Skip & dip, engine stumble, hesitation, missfire solved ! V70-XC70 1998

Ever since i bought the XC close to a year ago, it has been intermittently doing these two strange things: 1) at idle, the rpm would drop by about 300 rpm for a second then come back to normal. 2) at highway speed, there would be an hesitation but no rpm drop. And no fault codes.

I only recently started searching on various message boards and i found that i was not alone. The problem was given many different names (skip & dip, hesitation, stumble etc) and many potential causes were suggested. I cleaned the throttle body (cable operated on 1998 models), replaced the fuel filter and did a complete plugs, wire, cap and rotor job but that did not solve it. Thanks to www.brickboard.com (which i only recently discovered), i found that a ECM software upgrade was available, even though my Volvo dealer said there weren't any !!!

I printed the TSB and showed it to them so they had to admit it existed. They said that it wasn't a recall hence it did not show up when they did a search against my car's serial number... At my request, they did the upgrade in about 20 minutes last week and that solved the hesitation once and for all.

M 4.4 Software Upgrade

Background:
An engine control module (ECM) software upgrade is available to enhance overall engine speed performance. This will smoothen the occasional variation in engine speed which may be experienced on some vehicles.

The Service Campaign 81 equipment will be used to perform this one time software upgrade. You will be provided with two diskettes to update Service Campaign 81 equipment, an initial supply of labels and a new user's manual 2-28-0006 which explains how the equipment is to be utilized.
