Cam seal replacement 850 1994

Hi,

I did this job last week on an S40 but the procedure should be the same on the 850. I built a cam sprocket holding tool to remove the sprocket bolts. It's easy: too length of steel bolted one another with long bolt at their end. Ths will allow you to remove the sprockets without turning (too much) the camshaft. Then you replace the seals. Take care not to score the seal housing. It's quite difficult to get the seals out sometime. I found a good idea to screw a bolt inside the seal and then prise it out. To fit the new seal, you may use PVC tubing of appropriate size and tap the seal home unitil it is flush with its housing. Take care to insert the seal correctly and OIL THE SEAL FIRST BEFORE INSERTING IT!!!!!!!!!!! Aternatively, you can use the old oil seal in reverse position to tap the new one home.

To reinstall camshaft sprockets, you'll need to lock the camshaft. To do so, you'll need to unclip the fuel lines on the rear end of the camshaft (if applicable to 850). You'll need to remove the intake camshaft rear cap and the camshaft position sensor that is fitted to the rear end of the exhaust camshaft. On the exhaust camshaft, you'll find the rear oil seal. Do the same to renew it as for the front camshaft seals. Then you'll need to lock both the camshaft and crankshaft in position. THE VERY BEST THING is to ask your Volvo dealer to lend you (or lease you) 2 specific tools:

* Camshaft locking tool: 999 5452
* Crankshaft locking tool: 999 5451

There are alternative procedure to do the job but it is recommended to use Volvo tool. My Volvo dealer lend me these tools for 1 weekend for no money :). Normally it should not be a problem. You'll have to lock the camshaft and crankshaft in correct position BEFORE reinstalling the camshaft sprockets. Then you reinstall your timing belt etc.

If you want the complete procedure from VADIS (what Volvo dealer use), I can mail you the pages. Just give me your mail address.

NB: if you are doing the cam seals, it may be a good idea to renew both belts, tensioner etc, crankshaft oil seal and possibly oil pump seals and spring. Perhaps also the water pump......

Hope this helps
