ABS Fault, then engine quits V70-XC70 1998

For the last few days my '98 V70 AWD has been acting strange. First, the bulb-out indicator started glowing when pressing the brake pedal. OK, thought I'd have to replace a brake light bulb. Then the light went out, never to be seen again. All of the brake lights are working.

Next day, the ABS and TRACS OFF came on during light braking, accompanied by a buzzing brake pedal. A quick panic stop test revealed that the ABS was not working. A few miles later the indicators went out, and the ABS was working again. Next day, same thing happened. The lights came on, stayed on a for a few hours, and went out by themselves. OK, I thought... Maybe the ABS computer is fouled.

Here's the good part: Today, I got in my car after a meeting, and thirty seconds after driving away, the ABS and TRACS lights came on again, but this time the engine quit immediately, and the CHECK ENGINE light came on. I was able to restart the car, but it would only run for about 10 or 15 seconds before quitting again. And that is where things stand right now. The engine will start but only runs for a short time before stumbling and dying again.

Any speculation about what is going on? Are the ABS computers and the engine management computers somehow connected? Or is this a cruel coincidence? Sure am glad I got that VIP warranty!

Thanks,

--Phil
