Driver's seat memory buttons/1,2,3 850 1995

Can anyone explain simply to me how the memory store buttons work for the
driver's seat? I have read the manual and it seemed easy enough but I thought
that when one depresses any of the 3 buttons numbered one thru three, that the
specific button will store that seat position. When I get the seat where I want it, I am not sure how to store that position. Is it possible that something else is wrong like a memory chip or something?
