Faulty MAF sensor? 850

My check engine light came on, and I got a faulty MAF code from the diagnostic unit. I took the MAF sensor out to examine it, and broke it. The car wouldn't start after that so I shorted the terminals on the connector until it would start and run, but now this is the ONLY way it will start and run. I have tried two second hand sensors and neither will work. I can start the car with the bridging wire, but as soon as I plug in the sensor, it stalls.

Does anyone have any (polite!!!) suggestions? my repair manual suggests the sensor is fused, but there is no mention of where the fuse, if there is one, is located. Does it have a fuse? I'm running out of ideas and patience, so PLEASE help if you can and prevent me from doing something stupid to it.
