harbor freight code reader 850

Could I get someone's personal experience on the Harbor Freight Code Reader please ? I purchased one a couple of months back at the recommendation of several posts on this board, however, I can't get it to flash me a code. I've used it on a Toyota with a CEL and a numeric code pops right up. When I attach it to my Volvo though, I just get a series of flashing dashes but no numbers. I'm trying to figure out if those dashes mean something (such as the flashing light on the '93-'95 850's with the onboard diagnostic system). If you have this unit and can use it, will you please give me some insight on this thing.
