How do I tell if starter is going? V70-XC70 1998

Frantic wife called and said the car won't start. Turn the key and nothing!!
The battery is not dead since stereo/lights/etc work.

I travel 45 minutes to "rescue" her. Car is now running. I asked what happened; she tells me the man at the gas station told her it could be the starter and to keep turning the key and after (what she said was 10 minutes of) trying, the car fires up.

Now, I have the car at home and I cannot re-produce the problem.

Any ideas??

TIA

Chuck
