manual transmission fluid leak 850 SW 850

I have a manual transmission 1995, 850 SW. I have had a slow transmission fluid leak for the last 18 months or so. I fill up with transmission fluid every few months. I took the car to a local Exxon and the mechanic said I would need to replace the rack and pinion system because he saw that the seals were leaking. Is there a way for me to check exactly what is leaking (I have no experience with care repair) and if what he says is true is there a way to replace the seals without replacing the r and p system? The car has about 117,000 miles but the engine only has 40,000 miles (replaced about 12 months ago).

Thanks.

Val
