Evaporator 850 1997

My 850 GLT has 170,000 miles. Last July I had to have the A/C recharged for the first time. Dye was added. By end of summer, it was no longer cooling. My mechanic has found no visible leaks and believes the evaporator may be the problem. He advised that I simply recharge (at a cost of $50) rather than replace the evaporator (didn't get a quote to replace). This made sense to me as I've heard that replacement of evaporator can cost nearly $1,000. Does anyone disagree with this advise, and what have others paid for similar work? Thanks.
