Electrical fault 850 1996

I own a 96’ 850 SE that has a very drastic problem with the battery. After not driving it for about a week, I tried to start the engine and there was no response – the stereo, immobilizer were also not working. The battery was entirely drained. Previously there had been no indication of any electrical problems (no lights, sounds, etc.).
Consequently, I swapped the flat battery with a fully charged (same capacity – 65 Ah) from my other car.
When I connected the battery, sparks flew from the connectors – powerful enough to erode them. I assume there is a huge consumption of power taking place. I stopped any further attempts to start the car.
Has anybody had any similar experiences?
