Strange behavior 850 1996

Start with the simple stuff first...when was the last time the battery was replaced? If four or more years, then the battery needs replacing. After the new battery is installed and the headlights still dim when other loads are put on the battery, then the alternator/connections need looking at with the possibility that the alternator will have to be replaced. If on the other hand, your battery is OK and the alternator is OK but the car just shuts down as you described, then you likely have a faulty ignition switch. I havn't even mentioned the other areas to look at including battery connections etc.
