Sounds like your PNP switch is going. You are going to need that replaced... otherwise the transmission doesn't really know what position it is supposed to be in. The car kinda goes into a "limp home" mode when this happens and stays in 3rd gear only. Not really the easiest of repairs, so you might need to take it to the dealer.
