Occasional fuel odour/ thermostat/ fuel mileage. 850

I've noticed a strong raw fuel odour occasionally, I doesn't seem to happen when I fill the tank or anything, I fact if anything it appears most often when the tank is very low (and considering the recent fuel prices that is quite often!!!) I've also noticed that at times my coolant temp gauge drops down while driving, at first I assumed it was an electrical fault, now I think it may be a sticking(open) thermostat, seems to negatively affect my fuel mileage. I read that these cars had decent fuel mileage, mine seems a little thirsty, ANY THOUGHTS??? (The problem might be that my previous car was a 92 Jetta Deisel, don't miss the car but do miss the mileage!!!)
