Synthetic Oil

We purchased a 2004 S40 from a Volvo dealer yesterday, with 20,000 miles on it. We were told AFTER the deal was done that the car had synthetic oil in it. We asked the salesman about changing it back over to a regular motor oil, and he said he would ask his mechanics about it and give us a call. He called this morning and said that they did an oil change on it in prepping it for sale and had put regular oil in it. Shouldn't they have flushed the system, or do you not need to do that? They didn't. Also is synthetic oil better and should we put that back in it? Thanks
