Engine Light Problems 850

Hi,

My 1996 850R "check engine" won't go off. I had this problem in 2000 and 2002. Two years later it's on again. It seems that everytime I put the car in the shop for other mechanical problems, three months later (almost to the day) the engine light comes on and won't go off. I have tried tightening the gas cap per instructions from another Volvo owner but it did not help. The car runs perfectly well and I hate to put it in the shop again. It has been on for 3 weeks now. Has anyone else had this problem? I would appreciate all advice.
