What octane gas is really OK for 2002 2.9 (non-turbo) S80

So what octane fuel is safe for my wife's 2002 S80 2.9? I've been running 89 (mid-grade) since we got it and it runs fine on that. With gas prices sky rocketing I'm wondering if going down to 87 is OK. She doesn't drive it hard like I would but the hot summertime in GA may become an issue.

Any experiences from others out there?
