symptoms of bad evap coil 850 1996

It may be on its way to dealer because thats what they say has to be done, heres my story turn car on ac goes on most of the time compressor will not cycle on and off, then it over heats and shuts down, had it to dealer for leak check they say new evao coil, 1400 bucks with new high and low pressure switches. well I did the switches this weekend to save some $$$, the air blows nice and cold for about 6 mins in heat maybe 20 in lower temps, then you get this blast of musty smelling humid air and thats it goes off and blows this musty air. is it the evap coil or are they yanking my chain. I wonder about the compressor. thanks, kelly
