Check Engine Light V70-XC70 1998

Check Engine Light came on when kids got out and slammed the door. Last time it came on when we did not close the gas filler cap tightly and stayed on til the dealer switched it off. The Manual is useless in giving any clue other than 'possible fault in emission control system'.

How bad is this? Do I have to go back to the dealer again?
