Avoiding Airbag Light when removing dash 850

Need to pull my dash to do an odometer repair. Last time I pulled the dash to change some bulbs, I wound up with a light for faulty Airbag. In the process I had disconnected the right side airbag. I didn't turn on the ignition until it was reconnected but still wound up with the error.

If I disconnect the battery prior to disconnecting the airbag, will that prevent the error light?

I know there is a procedure on Bay 13 to do this by just propping up the drivers side of the dash, but last time I tried it I put several cracks in the black plastic strip that holds in the front of the dash. I would rather pull the whole dash than risk more damage.

Thanks
