Rattle from S60

I had an annoying rattle when travelling over bumpy roads, and suspected the plastic pan under the engine compartment. Anyway the rattle seems to have gone now that I've removed the pan. Is any important function served by that pan? If so, is there any way to eliminate the rattle (the bolts were all in tightly)?
