Clicking in steering wheel column S40-V40 2000

Hi! My '00 S40 ha just started making a sharp clicking/snapping noise in the steering wheel! It is coming from somewhere around or behind the air bag. It does not seem to be an electrical snap, but a mechanical click or snap. It does it turning both left and right, but not every turn......Any thoughts????thanks, Bill
