clutch pedal/side to side movement 850 1993

I am looking for help here on fixing my clutch pedal on my 1993 850glt. The car shifts fine, but the pedal seems to almost get stuck sometimes against the knee bolster trim panel. I removed the bolster trim panel and could see that there is some side to side play in the pedal itself. I wasn't able to get a look at the place where the pedal is attached because there is another plastic panel with a warning about the SRS system in the way. Is there an airbag that fires down towards the driver's knee? I fear things that explode.

Is there a bolt or something holding the clutch pedal in place that I need to tighten? Also, is it OK to permanently remove the plastic trim panel?
