Tubo Question 850

I have a turbo question. My 1994 850 turbo is currently has over 200,000 miles on it.

Recently I started noticing that the turb gauge, on the instrument cluster, shows normal boost pressure, but when I get on the acceleration hard, the needle jumps way beyond the white area and pegs out beyond that, and momentarily the vehicle stalls. The turbo suddenly stops and then regains strength at the moment that I let my foot off the gas.

Could this be a problem with the ECU? I find no error codes.

Why would the turbo, all of the sudden, start boosting too high. Is there some sort of turbo shut off to prevent over boosting?
