Replacing turn signal combo switch 850 1995

My dog broke the stalk of the turn signal switch. Got a new one(for $102.00)
It seems to be made of a stronger metal the the original, hopefully. Got the two torx screws out from the under side of the plastic cowl but still can't get it apart., do I have to remove the lowerplastic strip beneith this too?
and are there any air bag precautions to take? Thanks, Larry
