Shuttle shift 850 1997

The vehicle shifts from drive to 3rd and sometimes neutral, causing it to jump forward then slow down and back and forth. It is almost impossible to drive. Setting it in 3rd gear and driving slowly seems to help a little. Local Volvo dealer is thus far stumped. Other knowledgeable sources never heard of it. In spite of the obvious, no one can say with certainty it is the transmission. In present condition, the vehicle is worthless. HELP!
