Alarm V70-XC70

I own a 98 mod V70 2.0 (180 hp), bought recently, and i was looking in my owners manual and found that there are a pre-installed car alarm. But when i lock the doors with my key, the little red lamp on the dashboard don`t blink at all. In the maual it says the alarm lamp should blink once a second. There are also no alarm signal when i open the doors without turning off the alarm (opening the door with my key, without turning off the alarm, should to the alarm be the same as breaking inn?). I can hear the deadlocks engaging, but thats all. Any ideas what to do to get the alarm going? It`s pretty expensive to install a new one.. :-)
