How to install new rear springs in 850 850

I would like to install IPD rear Overload Springs in the back of my '97 850 GLT Wagon to help when it's fully loaded with people and stuff (which is quite often for me).

Haven't done this before, but I looked in the haynes manual and it looks pretty straightforward. This may be a dumb question, but is it necessary to remove the shocks before replacing the springs? The Haynes manual seems to indicate so. The previous owner had recently replaced the shocks (factory volvo shocks).

Any info is appreciated.

Bob
