Antena mast removal 850

Both my 850 and 780 have a problem extending the antena mast. They only come up to the first position. I thought I would buy a new mast, but I couldn't get the old mast out of my 850 (the 780 is still in the shop). I am afraid to pull too hard and break something. When I removed the whole antena, I could pull the mast out to the first position and the motor turned slowly (not plugged in). Should I keep pulling really hard? Why can't I use pliers to pull out the other sections, or does the plastic gear hold them in?

If I can get the mast out, should I try to clean the motor housing with very hot water or carb cleaner? It would be neat to "fix" something rather than "replacing" it. The antenae are not bent, as far as I can tell, but very dirty.

Thank you,

Klaus
