850 '96 DOME LIGHT-works if you hold the switch, also hold door side 850 1996

my 96 850 dome light works either in "always on" position or "door" position but only if you hold switch forcefully on. delay off also works fine if you continue to hold switch hard after you've closed the door. i took entire unit out of the car and hooked up aligator clips to a 9 volt battery, clipping the power strip on the switch and the ground strip on the switch. with that hook up lights worked fine when switched on and were not intermittent. plug seems very positive and very secure.
