850 wheels/tires 850

I just purchased a used 850 turbo wagon (1994 with 74,000 miles). Nto until all was said and done did I discover that it had 195/60R15 "studless" tires on it, and the label said that it started out with 205/50R16's (and probably Alloys, as every 850 turbo that we have looked at had those wheels). We are thinking that somewhere along the way from the trade in to the dealer to the wholesaler to the auction to the small independent dealer, someone decided to keep the nice alloy wheels and put the snow tire wheels onto the car.

My question: How important is it to have the 205/50/r16 tires and wheels on the car? Could I put those tires onto the current wheels? And if I buy used allows/tires, would 205/55R16's be OK instead of 205/50R16's?

Thanks for your help!
