Thank you for the very useful input. I think I understand what you are talking about. I just had a trip to Niagara Falls. On returning, there are two long-stretched uphills and my 95 850 (non turbo) could not even keep up the speed before climbing (felt totally helpless). Otherwise, my car did a very good job. I got 30 mpg on flat road and 28 mpg on mountain road with average speed between 70 and 75 miles per hour (AC was on most of the trip).
