turning off dashboard lights V70-XC70 2001

I have searched previous posts for this topic, but didn't find anything. Please forgive me if it has already been addressed.

Have just bought a used 2001 V70; like other Brickboard readers, I wasn't too happy with lack of flexibility offered by the Daytime Running Lights, and had them turned off the last time the car was in the shop.

I was delighted to be able to have the _option_ to turn the lights off. However, I was dismayed to notice that the dashboard lights remained on even when the light switch was set to "off". The garage informed me that the dash lights cannot be turned off.

I'd just like to see if that's really true. If so, is there a workaround? Not wanting to needlessly burn my dash lights out, it'd be great to have them turn off when the headlights are off (as my old '90 740 did!).

Thanks in advance,
Andrew
