Weird squeak/squeal when standing still? S40-V40 2001

Hi there,
We have a 2001 V40 with 36000 miles on it. We have an intermittent situation wherein about 6000 miles ago the car would start to make a squeak/squeal every once in a while while driving. I tried to figure out if it happened while accelerating, braking or steady cruising or maybe while turning. Well, it seemed to happen randomly at ALL of these situations and as of recently even does it when standing still at a red light with the car completely stationary and a firm foot on the brake pedal.

The noise itself is a fairly high-pitched squeal that rises and then quiets back down. It lasts maybe a second in total each time. It sounds rotational in nature, similar to a brake squeal but that is for sure not it since it has done it when totally stationary and in any case is a bit lower pitched that that. There is no consistency to when it occurs, can happen at any time but cannot be purposely duplicated.

Anybody else had this, I am baffled?
Jim
